REPORT: Middlesbrough fight back in stoppage time to earn draw at Millwall

Middlesbrough came back from two goals down to earn a draw away at Millwall. Goals from Aiden O’Brien and Lee Gregory put the hosts ahead, but Martin Braithwaite and George Friend’s goals meant the points were shared.

Millwall started the game well, and were 2-0 up by half-time. But following Martin Braithwaite’s goal three minutes from time, Millwall were pegged back. Middlesbrough took full advantage and scrambled home the equaliser in the seventh minute of additional time.

The opening goal was scored in the 12th minute by Aiden O’Brien and came after making a good darting run into the box. He fired home past the Boro ‘keeper Darren Randolph to put his side 1-0 up early on.

Pressure followed from Millwall, and so did the chances. Alarm bells were already ringing for Boro fans given the amount of opportunities Millwall had, but the second goal was of the Teessider’s own making.

£8 million summer signing Aden Flint attempted to header the ball back to Randolph in the Middlesbrough goal, but it was intercepted by Lee Gregory, who touched the ball under the onrushing goalkeeper and into the net.

Millwall could’ve easily had a third, with Steve Morison and Jake Cooper having opportunities to put them out of sight.

With 87 minutes on the clock, Middlesbrough’s Martin Braithwaite pulled one back, sneaking in a shot at the back post which beat Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer.

With five minutes added on, Boro threw bodies forward as they attempted to get an equaliser, and George Friend was the hero as he drew Middlesbrough level with one of the last kicks of the game. The ball came across the six-yard box and evaded everyone in a blue shirt, allowing Friend to prod home from close range.
