Sheffield Wednesday fans were not happy after they lost their opening match of the Sky Bet Championship season against Wigan Athletic.
The Owls went into this game full of negativity due to a lack of transfer activity this summer. It was also confirmed by a local journalist before the game that the rumours they were under a transfer embargo were true. Wigan on the other hand had a lot of positivity as they came in as the champions of Sky Bet League One.
The negativity around Wednesday only grew when Wigan took the lead early on through a deflected strike by Michael Jacobs. But that lead did not last that long. Atdhe Nuhiu’s first shot was blocked but he was able to follow that up and equalise. Though in a game that was breathless for a long time, Wigan were able to take the lead again when Jacobs was able to score again.
In the second half, things would get even worse for Wednesday. Jacobs was prevented from scoring his hat trick when Cameron Dawson, in for the seemingly outgoing Keiren Westwood, saved his shot but that was followed up by Nick Powell who made it three to Wigan. It was game on when Fernando Forestieri was able to finish after a good cross from Adam Reach and the Owls did press for an equaliser. They even continued to push when Nuhiu was sent off for a second bookable offence. But they were unable to equalise and Wigan got all three points.
As you would expect, Wednesday fans were not happy with the result.
Nothing to say about that disappointment #swfc

Absolutely awful performance by #swfc today. Can't think of any positives except Joao made an impact when he came on. Terrible system by Jos. Needs sorting asap. The defending was abysmal, particularly Van Aken and Dawson. Never seen anything quite like it. Promising season ahead
