Sheffield Wednesday ARE under a transfer embargo

Sheffield Wednesday are under a transfer embargo but cannot say so because of ‘financial implications’ according to a report from BBC Radio Sheffield journalist Andy Giddings.

The rumour of the summer for the Owls has been that they have been under a transfer embargo. The club have spent a lot of money over the last few years as they tried to get promoted to the Premier League but despite coming close by making it into the Sky Bet Championship play-offs on two occasions, they never made it and are still in this division.

But they are now paying for spending all that money and the rumours that they were under a transfer embargo have been increasing the longer the team went without signing anyone. Championship rivals Birmingham City have also been placed under a transfer embargo which they confirmed earlier in the summer and with Wednesday doing as much transfer dealing in recent years, it was fair to suggest that they had been placed under the same restriction. These restrictions would have been placed on the club due to breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

And it appears that all the rumours that Wednesday had been placed under a transfer embargo were true. Local journalist Alan Giddings confirmed it today ahead of the season opener against Wigan Athletic, saying the club had not confirmed it due to the ‘financial implications’. He widely expects more details to come out on Monday which is when chairman Dejphon Chansiri will face the fans in a fans forum at Hillsborough.
