Newcastle United reopen talks for Championship striker

Newcastle United have reopened talks with West Brom to try and come to an agreement to take Salomon Rondon back to the Premier League.

The Chronicle reported this morning that negotiations have restarted between Newcastle United and West Brom, as United look to sign striker Salomon Rondon.

The Chronicle understand that Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle is part of the conversation between the two clubs. Gayle was left out of Newcastle’s friendly against Porto last Saturday, but Gayle is keen to stay no Tyneside and West Brom are thought to be unwilling to pay Gayle’s wages.

Talks broke down between the two clubs, with Newcastle keen on Rondon but were unable to spend the £16 the Baggies are demanding due to Mike Ashley’s tight pockets. The Toon still favour a swap deal between the two clubs, but West Brom are unwilling to pay Gayle’s wages.

A loan deal for Gayle was a possibility, but Newcastle wanted Gayle to move to The Hawthorns permanently at the end of the season.

Rondon’s £16m release clause has now expired, so a potential player-plus-cash deal is on the cards between the two clubs.

United sold Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham for £22m earlier this week, and manager Rafa Benitez has identified Rondon as the ideal replacement for the big Serb.
