Tony Pulis says Middlesbrough’s new signing could miss the start of the season

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has said that new signing Paddy McNair could miss the trip to Millwall tomorrow afternoon. The news comes from Middlesbrough’s official website.

The Middlesbrough manager confirmed that McNair could be one of a handful of players who could miss the start of the season clash at The Den. Dani Ayala and Rudy Gestede missed the majority of pre-season and Adama Traore sustained a dislocated shoulder last week in a friendly against Sunderland.

McNair only joined Middlesbrough this transfer window from neighbours Sunderland, and is yet to make his competitive debut for the club. Boro fans will have been excited to see him make his bow against Millwall on Saturday but the Middlesbrough faithful may have to wait a couple of weeks yet.

Speaking to MFC.co.uk, manager Tony Pulis said, “It’s going to be quite a depleted squad. It think it’s five or six players will miss tomorrow that actually played in the Play-Off games against Aston Villa.

“I don’t think McNair will be fit. I think he’s struggling a bit. But we have to get on with it, and make up for it over the next couple of days.”

It is unclear as to who else will miss the game through injury other than Ayala, Gestede, Traore and McNair and with a ‘depleted squad’, it could be a difficult tie for Boro, who will be hoping to get their first points on the board.

Other summer signing Aden Flint, who made the switch from Bristol City, could make his debut however. He has been a mainstay in the side in pre-season, and looks to be first choice alongside Ben Gibson.
