Fletcher, Sheffield Wednesday striker set to make return after eight month lay-off

Sheffield Wednesday striker set to make return after eight month lay-off

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Jos Luhukay has told the Sheffield Star that Steven Fletcher will return to the matchday squad on Saturday following being out with injury for eight months.

Last season several Wednesday players were ruled out with injury which contributed to them not being involved in the promotion battle and instead having to settle for a mid-table position. One of the worst affected players was Fletcher. The 31-year-old striker suffered a knee injury back in December and has not played a single game for the Owls since.

But even though he was linked with a move away from the club this summer, Fletcher will be returning from his injury this weekend as he is set to be named in the squad for the Sky Bet Championship fixture against Wigan Athletic. Luhukay confirmed the news today in his pre-match press conference though he will be on the bench as he is yet to get enough fitness to start.

Luhukay said: “Steven has come slowly back,”

“Then he made minutes in friendly games and has come back to the team. The most important thing is that he feel himself that every day he will be stronger.”

“He’s in the squad on Saturday,”

“But I think he has been away too long from the team and games for 90 minutes.”

“The next step for Steven is to get Championship minutes,”

“We have seen he is a striker who always tries to look where the goal is, that he can score goals.”

The match against Wigan will take place on Saturday at the DW Stadium.
