Sheffield Wednesday issue expected update on Almen Abdi

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Jos Luhukay has confirmed to the Sheffield Star that Almen Abdi is injured and will not be playing in Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship match against Wigan Athletic.

It is now just two days until the start of the season for Sheffield Wednesday and fans are now speculation who will start. One frustrating aspect is that there are no new signings to excited over but that does give a chance to players who have been out of favour in recent times. One of those players is Abdi, who has struggled with injuries ever since moving to the Owls from Watford in 2016.

But in news that won’t be surprising to any Wednesday fan, Abdi will not be playing in the season opener against Wigan Athletic as he has picked up another injury. Luhukay has said that the Swiss man got the hamstring injury a fortnight ago and it will rule him out for an undetermined amount of time. He joins Gary Hooper and Kieran Lee on the injury list.

Luhukay said: “Almen Abdi is injured,”

“Kieran Lee and Gary Hooper are working intensively to try to get back. They are also not available for Saturday.”

“It’s difficult what has happened with him (Abdi),” Luhukay said. “In the last two years he has had a couple of injuries.”

“He trained for four weeks of pre-season. He did every training session and also played minutes in the (early) friendly games we had. He has now been 10 days not training with the team.”
