Wigan Athletic leading Bolton Wanderers in chase for Everton defender

Wigan Athletic are leading Bolton Wanderers in the chase to sign Everton’s Antonee Robinson on loan according to a report from the Liverpool Echo.

The 20-year-old defender, who has been capped twice by the USA, came through the Everton academy but he is yet to make his debut for the Toffees. He had been a regular for the U23s but got his first taste of competitive football last season when he moved on loan to Bolton for the season. During this spell, he made 30 appearances and helped the Lancashire side to stay in the Sky Bet Championship.

Now Robinson is back at Everton and has been taking part in the Everton pre-season as he looks to break into their first team. But with them signing Lucas Digne this summer, he has been pushed down the pecking order and they are willing to let him leave on loan to gain more first-team experience. Bolton instantly wanted to bring him back for another season while Wigan have joined the race to sign him following their promotion back to the Championship.

At first, it appeared that Bolton were going to win the race to sign Robinson. It made sense as he’s already familiar with the club but now it appears that Wigan are more likely to sign him. The report doesn’t say why the Latics have managed to get an advantage over their Lancanshire rivals in this chase but it will be a great boost for them if they are able to wrap up this deal soon.
