Chris Wilder insists top Sheffield United defender is not for sale amid Brighton and Hove Albion interest

Sheffield United head coach Chris Wilder has told Sky Sports News that Jack O’Connell is not for sale despite interest from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Brighton had made a bid worth £6m for O’Connell. While the Seagulls had been trying to sign Liam Moore from Reading, the move has stalled recently and they were looking to other targets. With O’Connell being an impressive part of the Blades last year, they decided to go for him though those bids were rejected.

With United already selling one key player this summer, David Brooks headed to Bournemouth for a fee said to be worth £10m, fans may have been concerned that they’d cash in on another one of their star assets. But Wilder has insisted that they will not be selling O’Connell and that he will still be a Sheffield United player following the end of the transfer window.

He said: “We’ve had bids from Brighton but he is not for sale,”

“They keep calling but I’ve spoken to Chris Hughton, who is a fantastic guy – in football circles there is nobody better than him, experienced and down to earth.”

“But we’ve said to Chris that Jack is not for sale. He has recently signed a four-year contract.”

“I’ve spoken to Jack and he will be in our team on Saturday.”

As confirmed there by Wilder, O’Connell should be in the United team for their first Sky Bet Championship game of the season where they will be facing Swansea City.
