Bolton Wanderers complete move for Leeds United midfielder

Bolton Wanderers have signed Luke Murphy from Leeds United on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The 28-year-old midfielder came through the famous Crewe Alexandra academy, playing alongside the likes of Nick Powell and Ashley Westwood. After impressing for the Railwaymen, he earned a £1m move to Leeds United in 2013. While he has made over 100 appearances for the Whites, he has struggled to keep his spot in the first team recently and ended up joining Burton Albion for two different loan spells over the last 18 months.

And with Murphy still unlikely to get into the first team under new head coach Marcelo Bielsa, the club decided to release him with just a year left on his deal. But he didn’t have to wait long to find a new club as he has now signed a two-year contract with Bolton. He will now be hoping for a regular first team spot and avoid another relegation like what happened with him at Burton last season.

He said: “I’m delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get started and get to know everyone at such a great club.”

“It’s a fantastic club that’s been in the Premier League and looking at the squad for this season, it shows real potential.”

“Having spoken to the manager, and with the direction the club is going in, it was an easy decision for me.”

His new head coach Phil Parkinson added: “We are pleased with the signing of Luke. He’s a player with plenty of Championship experience and we are looking forward to working with him.”
