Black Cats facing injury crisis ahead of season opener

Sky Bet League One club Sunderland could be without up to six first team players for their season opener against Charlton Athletic at The Stadium of Light on Saturday according to the Sunderland Echo.

The Black Cats have suffered back-to-back relegations from the English Premier League and Sky Bet Championship and now kick-off their rescue mission in the third tier with a home fixture against Charlton Athletic who were losing Play-Off semi-finalists last term.

It has been reported that Tom Flanagan, Dylan McGeouch, Reece James and Ethan Robson are all doubts for the match while Aiden McGeady and Duncan Watmore are definately out as they recover from long-term injury problems.

Sunderland ended last season bottom of the Sky Bet Championship with just 37 points from their 46 matches. The Wearsiders won just seven matches all season as they again fell through the relegation trapdoor.

There is a mild sense of optimism at The Stadium of Light going into the new campaign with Sunderland have been taken over by Stewart Donald in the summer. The club have smashed the 20,000 barrier for season ticket sales with fans eager to continue to back The Black Cats despite their recent woes.

Sunderland face a hectic first month of fixtures with six games in league and cup. New manager Jack Ross will be hoping to see the list of casualties reduce as the month goes on.
