Tony Mowbray confirms Blackburn Rovers still want to sign Middlesbrough and Newcastle United pair

Blackburn Rovers head coach Tony Mowbray has told the Lancashire Telegraph, with words being reported by the Shields Gazette, that he still wants to sign Middlesbrough’s Harry Chapman and Newcastle United’s Adam Armstrong on loan.

Last year was the first brilliant year in a while for Blackburn as they got promoted back to the Sky Bet Championship at the first time of asking. And a lot of that was down to the performances of the two loanees Chapman and Armstrong that they brought in. Chapman, a 20-year-old winger, came into Blackburn after recovering from a serious injury and would make 12 appearances and score one goal for them in this time. However, while Chapman did well, Armstrong was a star as he joined up with Blackburn in the second half of the season to score nine goals in 21 appearances.

When the season ended, both Chapman and Armstrong returned to their respective clubs. They have both been playing in their team’s pre-season campaigns and have been doing their best to break into the first team at their respective clubs. But with the season proper about to strong, each club is set to make a decision on whether or not these players will be loaned out.

And Mowbray is hoping that he can sign both players ahead of their return to the Championship. He said: “I think they are very much still very much in the mix,”

“I don’t think we should be talking about other teams’ players, but I have had some conversations with their clubs.”

“We have lists and they are not, and have not been, at the top of those lists.”

“They are two young boys and I think it’s right that they are not right at the top of the lists, because if we are to be competitive in this division then we need players who have more experience, more goals and game-time in the league and understanding of it that bit better.”

“Sometimes targets drift away, someone buys them for £7million and you think ‘wow’.”
