Portsmouth battling with Rotherham United to sign Premier League midfielder

Portsmouth are interested in signing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Richie Towell, according to the Sheffield Star.

Newly-promoted Championship side Rotherham United have been trying to sign the Irishman again after he impressed for them on loan in League One last season. However, wages have been a stumbling block in the deal.

Richie Towell has been made available by Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion having fallen down the pecking order under Chris Hughton.

He joined the Seagulls when they were in the Championship in 2015 from Dundalk but has only played 8 times for their first-team since his move. Towell was loaned out to the Millers last season and played 45 games for them in all competitions and chipped in with 6 goals to help them gain promotion from League One.

Rotherham are keen to bring another central midfielder to the club before the season starts and Towell remains a target for Paul Warne.

Portsmouth are now hoping to land Towell too as they plot their own promotion push from the third tier this season. Their manager, Kenny Jackett, is keen to add more depth and creativity to his midfield and Towell fits the bill for them.

Pompey have so far signed experienced defender Lee Brown from Bristol Rovers, Ronan Curtis from Derry City and Louis Dennis from Bromley but are keen to bring some more new faces to Fratton Park before the end of the transfer window.

The race in on now between Rotherham and Portsmouth to sign Brighton midfielder Richie Towell. This is a transfer saga that could go down to the wire.
