Middlesbrough ‘closing in’ on £7m deal for Ipswich Town’s Martyn Waghorn

According to reports in The Hartlepool Mail, Middlesbrough are ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn for a fee in the region of £7 million.

The in-demand Ipswich striker has attracted attention from the likes of Derby County, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United after a successful season at Portman Road. The forward scored 16 goals and registered 11 assists in the last Championship campaign.

Derby are said to have cooled their interest in Waghorn following Matej Vydra’s move to Leeds breaking down, resulting in the Czech staying at the club. Sheffield United and Middlesbrough are now left vying for the Ipswich star’s signature, but it is Boro in the driving seat to sign Waghorn this window.

The 28-year old cost the Tractor Boys under £1 million from Rangers last summer, but his form has boosted his transfer value massively. Ipswich originally set an asking price of £10 million, but with Middlesbrough willing to offer £7 million it is reported Ipswich are to accept a bid for the striker.

Waghorn’s move to the Riverside has been made feasible following the expected departure of Boro striker Patrick Bamford. Leeds United looks to be the destination for Bamford, with a reported £7 million fee agreed, allowing Waghorn to join Middlesbrough for the same price before the window shuts.

Middlesbrough were the lowest scorers in the top six last season in the Championship, and with Waghorn’s ability to assist and score goals, he will be a great asset to any team looking to bolster their goals tally. In comparison Bamford scored 11 goals last season, providing one assist.
