Steve McClaren responds to claims QPR will be forced to sell players

QPR head coach Steve McClaren has told West London Sport that they don’t need to sell players following their fine from Financial Fair Play.

Last week QPR came to an agreement with the EFL on how much they would have to pay them after receiving a fine due to breaching FFP rules. Their negotiators did good work as they managed to get the fine down from £42m down to £17m. They will also pay over ten years rather all at once and these outgoings will not count to their overall FFP total.

Even though it’s a lot better than what it could have been, the conversion of directors loans into equity has led to reports that QPR need to raise £40m this summer. This has led to further reports that Luke Freeman is set to leave the club with Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion all being interested in him.

But McClaren has denied those reports saying he doesn’t need to sell a single player this summer. He said: “Whatever news came out, it doesn’t change the situation we’re in,”

“It doesn’t change our plans in terms of we don’t have to sell players we don’t want to sell. We don’t have to do that.

“The owners are still right behind this football club – right behind taking it forward, despite the hurdles which people have put in front. They want to progress.”

QPR will kick off their Sky Bet Championship campaign on Saturday when they travel to Preston North End.
