Highly-rated Arsenal goalkeeper joins Plymouth Argyle on a season long loan

Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of highly-rated Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey on a season long loan, confirmed by the club.

Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of highly-rated Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey on a season long loan.

His career began at Bristol Rovers, but he was snapped by Arsenal in 2013 without featuring for the Gas first-team.

Matt Macey made his professional debut on loan to Sky Bet League Two Accrington Stanley.

The following campaign saw him spend more time in League Two at Luton Town before being recalled to the Emirates and making his Arsenal debut in a fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Norwich City last season.

Former Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger said this about the goalkeeper: “He’s huge. He’s quick. You don’t often find combinations of that size and that speed. He’s very agile, as well, for a guy who’s tall like that.”

“He came late to us, considering normally the goalkeepers come at the age of 16,” said Wenger. “He came at 20 basically. But he’s intelligent and very focused and that’s why I was pleased to give him a chance. I think he took it already against Norwich and again [against Red Star] he played very well.”

Plymouth have bolstered their defence this summer with former Falkirk defender Peter Grant and ex-MK Dons centre-back Scott Wootton signing for the club.

Grant, 24, who is the namesake son of the Scotland assistant manager, made 101 league appearances in four seasons with the Bairns.

He scored for Falkirk in their Scottish Cup final defeat by Inverness in 2015.

Wootton, 26, began his career at Manchester United and spent three seasons at Leeds United before moving to Milton Keynes in the summer of 2016.
