Peterborough United’s 2018/19 captain revealed

Peterborough United manager Steve Evans confirmed, when speaking to Peterborough Today, that the new club captain will be midfielder Alex Woodyard, after Jack Baldwin’s transfer listing and sale to recently relegated Sunderland.

Evans stated that the Peterborough United captaincy has been up for contention this summer, and revealed that he had whittled it down to Alex Woodyard, Jason Naismith and Ryan Tafazolli earlier in the summer.

A couple of weeks ago, Evans said that the captain would be one of either Woodyard or Naismith. And in Posh’s pre-season friendly with Bolton on Saturday, it was revealed that Alex Woodyard had been given the armband for the 2018/19 League On season.

Naismith will fill in as captain in the absence of Woodyard as vice-captain for the upcoming season, and it is highly likely that Tafazolli will be captain in the unlikely absence of both Woodyard and Naismith.

Scottish right-back Naismith joined from Ross County earlier in the summer, after Posh beat Sunderland and Championship opposition to his signature.

25 year-old midfielder Woodyard joined from League Two side Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee after his release clause was met – which is believed to be around £200,000. Posh manager Steve Evans has compared the midfielder to club legend Mick Malsall upon his arrival.

In an interview with PeterboroughToday, Evans said:

“I’ve gone with Alex over Jason because of his experience in English football,” Evans said. “Both would be excellent captains and they will work very closely with each other anyway.”

“Alex reminds me of the best Posh skipper, Mick ‘Scouse’ Halsall, in terms of the way he plays and his fighting spirit. Alex is probably a bit quieter than Mick, but the same desire and will-to-win is obvious.”

“Neither Alex nor Jason are ‘yes’ men which is important to me. They shared the captaincy duties in Portugal and they weren’t shy in offering an opinion when they felt it was necessary.”
