Newcastle United open talks with West Brom striker

Premier League club Newcastle United have opened talks with West Brom over the potential signing of striker Salomon Rondon, according to Sky Sports.

The Magpies are set to sell Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham after he impressed whilst on loan at Craven Cottage last season.

Rondon has a £16.5m release clause in his contract at The Hawthorns and Rafa Benitez views the Venezuelan as the ideal replacement for the outgoing Serb.

Mitrovic is thought to be in London to undergo a medical ahead of the move, so Benitez is ramping up his interest in Rondon to secure his services as quickly as possible.

A move for Rondon could potentially see Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle go the other way, after the former Crystal Palace man failed to establish himself in the Premier League.

If Gayle was to move to West Brom, it could be a straight swap deal or a player plus cash move.

The 28 year old netted 23 goals for Newcastle during their time in the Championship, but only managed to find the back of the net on 6 occasions last season.

Gayle could be the perfect man to help fire the Baggies back in to the top tier of English football.

Rondon has spent three years with West Brom, making 108 appearances during his time in the Midlands.

The striker has scored 24 goals in the Premier League and is heavily admired by Benitez.

Rondon is a proven striker at Premier League level, and after struggling for goals last campaign, Rafa Benitez will be hoping the West Brom man could find the back of the net for Newcastle next season.
