Sunderland join race to sign Forest Green Rovers striker

Sunderland have joined the race to sign Forest Green Rovers’ Christian Doidge according to a report from Sky Sports.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Bristol Rovers were interested in signing Doidge. And it’s no wonder why. After returning to the EFL last season with Forest Green, he showed himself to be one of the best goalscorers in Sky Bet League Two. He would end up scoring 25 goals in 49 appearances last season, being one of the key reasons why Forest Green stayed in the division last season. Bradford City and Peterborough United are also reportedly interested in Doidge.

But those three teams aren’t the only teams that are trying to sign Doidge. Sunderland are now also looking to sign him. The Black Cats have already missed out on one target when Mo Eisa decided to move to Bristol City instead and while Bradford’s Charlie Wyke is their number one target, they are considering moving for Doidge should that not work out. And even though it would be a massive step up for Doidge, it would also be a great opportunity for him.

Sunderland would likely be leading the race as while they are just one of a number of League One teams after Doidge, the size and potential of being part of a club as big as the Wearside club would be tough to turn down. The Forest Green man could join eight other signings that Sunderland have made this summer with the likes of Glenn Loovens, Tom Flanagan and Chris Maguire also joining this summer.
