West Brom set to beat Hull City & Ipswich Town to signing of League One defender

West Brom are set to win the race to sign Scunthorpe United left-back Conor Townsend, according to the Express & Star.

The Baggies are hoping to tie up a deal for the highly-rated over the next few days.

Townsend has been a man in-demand in this transfer window after he impressed last season for Scunthorpe United in League One. He looks to have now earned himself a move to West Brom in the Championship.

West Brom have so far signed goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Manchester United, Kyle Bartley from Swansea City, Jonathan Bond on a free transfer and Harvey Barnes on a season-long loan from Leicester City.

They are now looking to bring in some more players before the transfer window shuts. Their manager, Darren Moore, has targeted a move for Townsend as he look to add some more competition and depth to his defensive options.

Ipswich Town were keen on signing the 25-year-old. The Tractor Boys’ new manager, Paul Hurst, knows all about him from playing against in League One last season whilst manager of Shrewsbury Town.

Hull City were also trying to re-sign Townsend. The Hull-born left-back started his career with the Tigers and rose through the youth ranks at the KCOM Stadium. After various loan spells away at the likes of Chesterfield, Grimsby Town and Dundee United, Hull sold him to Scunthorpe in 2016.

Hull do in fact have a sell-on clause for Conor Townsend so would receive some money if West Brom can get a deal over the line. However, it is a blow for them to be missing out on signing him back.
