Leeds United striker Grot continues on loan scoring run

When Leeds United snapped up imposing Dutch striker Jay-Roy Grot last summer much was expected of the former Holland Under-20 international.

It is quite safe to say that things did not quite work out that way.

It’s quite ironic that Grot cuts an imposing brute of a figure on the field, yet some Leeds United fans will be quick to indicate that he’s hardly the most physically imposing of players.

It wasn’t long before Leeds fans were on the youngster’s back; not all fans it must be added, just some of them. Yet those who castigated did so loudly, and often.

Grot must have some level potential, likely bags of it as you don’t get picked to be an Under-20 international without having something about you. Leeds United fans didn’t get to see that during his 19 Championship appearances (295 minutes) last season in the famous white shirt.

Rather what they got to see was a pale imitation of potential and promise as the youngster was underused and whatever confidence that he had ebbed away. He only started one game, against Preston North End. His campaign ended with just the one goal and the one assist.

With new Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa already pretty much set on what his main squad will be, it looked like more time on the sidelines for the Dutch youngster. However, a loan out the Dutch Eredivisie side VVV Venlo is likely the best move for both parties.

Since arriving at Venlo, Grot has been hitting the net with regularity in pre-season, even accounting for the level of the opposition. First up he hit a brace against minnows Veritas in a 7-1 drubbing.

After that it was minnows SVEB who were put to the sword as Venlo smashed 16 past them, Grot bagging a second, consecutive brace. A week ago it was a step up in class for Grot’s Venlo side as they faced third-tier competition in De Treffers.

The step up in class saw a drop down in goals with Venlo running out eventual 3-0 winners on the day – Grot grabbing a single goal in the 56th minute to take his tally to five in three games.

Today it was a big hike in class as Grot’s Venlo took on fellow Eredivisie side FC Twente. What will please Leeds fans is that Grot took the step-up in his stride, scoring in the encounter in the 21st minute.

This goal marked his 6th goal what is rapidly becoming a very productive pre-season for the on-loan Leeds United striker. You can, of course in some circumstances, criticise the level of competition, and rightly should do so. Yet Jay-Roy Grot is simply doing what all strikers get paid to do – score goals.
