Monk

Birmingham linked with experienced West Bromwich Albion man

Birmingham City have felt the wrath of Las Palmas today, a 4-1 defeat for the Blues, Garry Monk with much work to do. As last season came to a close and Monk, Clotet and Beattie steered the club to safety things were looking up, but not so much now.

Birmingham have made just one signing this summer, the arrival of Kristian Pederson from Union Berlin. The left-back seems a steady addition but at the same time he isn’t exactly a game changer for Monk, a manager who will want to be challenging at the top-end of the table. With the current squad and lack of investment, FFP playing a huge role it’s hard to see where things will improve drastically.

The club have today been linked with West Brom goalkeeper Boaz Myhill again, a player previously linked with a move to St. Andrews. The goalkeeping situation at Birmingham is unclear. David Stockdale isn’t wanted by Monk and getting him off the wage bill would certainly help all involved but nobody wants to take him at this stage and time is running out.

The only concrete offer for Stockdale was from Leeds United, a loan that Birmingham refused, now leaving them with the player on big wages with no part to play in the first-team. Has stubbornness cost the Blues in this case? Time will tell, Leeds moved on and signed the highly rated Jamal Blackman, Birmingham have now seemingly turned their attentions to veteran Myhill.

Time is running out for clubs to get deals done and Birmingham are the prime example of a club lagging. If Garry Monk ends up with the current squad then it’s fair to say he won’t be very impressed. The club do have some good players but progress will be difficult. This was supposed to be a new start for the Blues. There is jut a week until the Championship season kicks off.
