Billy Bremner is rightly thought of as a legend in football, and more so a legend close to the hearts of Leeds United fans.
Rightly voted as the club’s greatest player, he was a legend who became synonymous with the #4 shirt at Elland Road. Signed as a 17-year-old in 1959, Bremner went on to make 773 appearances for Leeds United, scoring 115 goals in the process.
Since 1999 Bremner has been remembered more deeply outside of Elland Road, a nine-foot statue, sculpted by Frances Segelman, capturing the very essence of the firey, and combative Scottish midfielder who epitomised the very soul and ethos of the greatest Leeds United side ever to take to the field.
Brenmer’s image has stood there since, outside Elland Road, and has become a focal point for Leeds United fans with many a photograph taken, many a floral tribute left. The statue was all the fans had, that was until late November when the idea of ‘Bremner Square’ was first put forward to Leeds United fans by the club.
Under the banner headline of ‘Be part of our history and future’, Leeds United announced that 10 dedicated stones would be commissioned to be laid around a redeveloped base of the statue – these 10 from the Whites’ past going on to form the ‘Bremner Square XI’.
Fans were also invited to become a permanent part of the memorial, being able to purchase a personally engraved stone to be laid, with prices starting at just £60 for the smallest of the stones to be laid.
Phase one of the redevelopment is complete, and the club have announced the opening of Bremner Square, as seen in the following video:

Not only that but here’s some pictures that he has taken, showing the developing menorial to Leeds United’s greatest ever player.
Bremner Square looks great, check it out whenever you’re next down at Elland Road. Three #lufc legends opened it this morning and were as brilliant as ever – some great words from Eddie, Peter and Norman on Paul Madeley too. pic.twitter.com/zEcbMEDrAn
