Leeds United, Leeds United “outside bet” for Troy Deeney

Leeds United “outside bet” for Troy Deeney

There can be little doubt that Leeds United need names in at the club and quick. They’ve missed out on players, and need some in with the new season less than a couple of weeks away.

One of the big deficiencies in the side at the moment is a distinct lack of goal threat – well a consistent goal threat that is. Leeds have been linked with the likes of Matej Vydra and Abel Hernandez since the end of last season – both these coming to nothing due to exorbitant wages demands.

But the struggle to replace the deadly consistency of Chris Wood goes on – and there could be a new name thrown into the mix according to the BBC’s Mike Bushell in a tweet (below) since deleted.
Leeds United, Leeds United “outside bet” for Troy DeeneyDeeney is currently on the books at Premier League side Watford and would be a massively ambitious target for the Whites to go after. He featured in 29 Premier League games for Watford last season, scoring five goals and providing two assists playing as an out-and-out centre-forward.

Drop him down a level in the football ladder to Championship level and Deeney is lethal. At Championship level the former Aston Villa youth player has played 205 games, scoring 77 goals and providing 32 assists – those goals coming at the rate of a goal every 194 minutes.

Despite the tweet being deleted, something Bushell explains the relevance of further down the thread, the BBC Breakfast Sport presenter agrees with the following Leeds United fan when the matter of wages is brought up – but does offer hope:

It is both true and worrying that wages of that magnitude are a block on interest for Leeds United, or could be. However, wages aside, Bushell does present something that would give a glimmer of hope for salivating Leeds United fans in the form of Deeney having a “soft spot” for the Whites. Bushell then goes on to mention his reasoning for deleting the ‘Deeney interest’ tweet:

Rumour or not, signing Deeney even on loan would be a massive signal of intent sent out not only to fans, but also to the rest of the Sky Bet Championship. Only time will tell whether this tale has legs or whether it simply just legs it.
