A look into the League 1 top goalscorer market

League 1 promises to be another captivating division this coming season with a host of teams boasting quality strikers. The bookies have recently been pricing up the top goalscorer market and it is a great chance for punters to find some value.

The two favourites to collect the golden boot at the end of the season are Britt Assombalonga and Sam Baldock of Peterborough United and Bristol City respectively, and it’s easy to see why. Assombalonga who thrived last season with Posh is more than capable of having another fantastic season. He is quick, strong, can score all types of goals and is only going to get better. At 6/1 he looks a great bet for top scorer. For the same price you can get Baldock to come top of the pile, the frontman has always delivered at this level,  for both MK Dons and Bristol City and won the award last season. With ammunition coming from the likes of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Wade Elliot and new signing Luke Freeman then Baldock should have another prolific season.

Another player who could be in with a real shout is MK Dons striker Tom Hitchcock. Hitchcock, who spent productive loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Rotherham United last season from parent club QPR and is aiming to emulate what Patrick Bamford achieved last season at Stadium:MK. The youngster scored on his debut for QPR and also showed his class after he came off the bench to score a wonderfully taken hat-trick for Rotherham away at Gillingham last season. At odds of 16/1 Hitchcock looks a very nice bet.

It is always worth trying to find some each-way bets for the outsiders in the market and there are a few diamonds in the rough. Cody McDonald had an excellent season with Gillingham when he joined them on loan in the 2010-2011 campaign scoring 25 goals and will be looking to find that form again this time around, with service coming from the likes of new recruits Jermaine McGlashan and Brennan Dickinson, 33/1 is worth an each way punt for the Gills striker. You can also get Swindon Town big man Michael Smith at 33/1. Smith enjoyed a healthy second half of the season for the Robins and is likely to be their main man up top for the forthcoming season. Others include Doncaster striker Theo Robinson (66/1) and Oldham’s ever improving Jonson Clarke-Harris (100/1) who are both worth a speculative 50p each way.
