According to The Mirror, Swansea City are ready to axe both Alfie Mawson and Kyle Naughton in order to free up vital space on their wage bill, and a separate report suggests Newcastle are ready to make a move for Federico Fernandez.
Swansea’s rebuilding and reshaping for the up and coming Championship campaign has begun, with plenty of first-team players expected to depart this transfer window.
Alfie Mawson has been subject to interest from Burnley, and he could leave in a big money deal. As well as Mawson, Kyle Naughton has also been told he will be allowed to depart the club if another team decides to make a move for the former-Tottenham right-back.
Federico Fernandez has been at the club since 2014, and it is reported that Newcastle United are keen to bring the Argentina international to St. James’ Park. However, Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is looking for a loan-deal, as opposed to signing the centre-back on a permanent contract.
Fernandez could be available for a cut-price with Swans boss Graham Potter wanting a fee in the region of £6 million for the defender. This shows they are willing to let him go without putting up much of a fight, and could be another to free up the wage bill.
Swansea are reportedly close to signing Yeovil Town defender Tom James, who used to be on the books at Cardiff City. With Potter gaining multi-million pound sums for first-team players, James’ fee of £350,000 shows serious intent to cut down the finances at the Liberty Stadium.
