Newcastle United hoping to sign Swansea’s Federico Fernandez in cut-price deal

According to The Sun, Newcastle United are interested in bringing Swansea City and Argentina centre-back Federico Fernandez to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has reportedly been offered a £100 million war chest to revamp his Magpies squad, and he could start his spending by pursuing a deal for Swansea City defender Federico Fernandez.

Fernandez has been a vital part of Swansea’s side for a number of years, and his experience in the Premier League and at international level for Argentina has made him a wanted man. Newcastle are the latest side expressing an interest, and the defender is believed to be valued at £6 million.

According to The Sun, Benitez may opt instead for a loan-deal for Fernandez, as opposed to signing the defender on a permanent deal. But this could be out of the question for new Swans boss Graham Potter, who will be looking to get rid of some high earners at the club.

Swansea are looking to off-load plenty of first team players to free up an expensive wage bill heading into the Championship after relegation, and Fernandez could find himself on the chopping block as a result.

The Argentine signed for Swansea from Napoli in 2014, and has gone on to make over 100 appearances in the Premier League, and has played for the Argentina national team 32 times, scoring three goals.

Swansea get their Championship campaign underway against Sheffield Wednesday at the Liberty Stadium next weekend, and whether this is with Fernandez in the side or not remains to be seen.
