Steve Evans yet to make a decision regarding Peterborough United trialist

In an interview with the club’s YouTube channel, Peterborough United manager Steve Evans stated that he is yet to make a decision whether to sign trialist Anton Rodgers.

Rodgers has been training with Peterborough United over the course of the summer to improve his fitness. Rodgers has been in the matchday squad for all of the club’s pre-season friendlies so far, and travelled with Posh for the club’s pre-season tour of Portugal.

In the interview, Evans said,

“Anton is still with us and he’s getting better and fitter. There is no rush to make a decision on him, but he has shown some moments of quality with his passing this summer.”

Rodgers – son of Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers – has most recently been playing with National League South side Hungerford Town. Rodgers made 68 appearances for Swindon Town after joining from Oldham Athletic in 2014. However, he was released in the summer of 2017.

It was reported by Peterborough Today earlier in the summer that Rodgers had only played in a friendly against local side Stamford Town because of an injury to midfielder Jermaine Anderson. However, it seems that Rodgers has grown on Evans after his development and determination in training.

Chances are, Rodgers would be brought in as a squad player. New signings Alex Woodyard, Louis Reed and Mark O’Hara have impressed throughout pre-season. Adam King has also been brought in on loan, and Evans rates Jermaine Anderson highly. Anthony Grant is still at the club and available for transfer, after a move to Shrewsbury fell through.

Rodgers wouldn’t be the kind of player to come in and bring bums off seats at London Road, but as Evans looks to build a squad capable of winning League One, squad depth and reinforcements will be required, which Anton Rodgers would provide.
