Sky Bet League One outfit Shrewsbury Town have today announced the addition of Chelsea midfielder Charlie Colkett on a season-long loan. The 21-year-old was not involved today as Shrewsbury entertained Brentford in a pre-season friendly encounter.
John Askey is now settling into life in the Shrewsbury hot seat and is beginning to assemble the squad that he wants. Taking over from the departed Paul Hurst is no easy challenge, but luring Colkett to the club proves that there is still some ambition for the club to potentially challenge for the play-offs once again.
Colkett is one of many youngsters that continue to be loaned out by the Premier League giants, who are now managed by Maurizio Sarri. The attacking midfielder is yet to make his first team debut for the Stamford Bridge club, but he does possess some decent experience from his loan stints away. He has lower league football under his belt playing for Bristol Rovers and Swindon Town. In the second half of last season, Colkett was in Eredivisie with Vitesse, who Chelsea frequently loan some of their younger stars too.
Shrewsbury get their Sky Bet League One campaign under way on August 4th when welcoming Bradford City to New Meadow. Colkett will be looking to get some football under his belt prior to then, as match fitness will be an issue at this stage. He is likely to prize himself a spot in Askey’s starting eleven once he does indeed reach full fitness. Askey had already added the likes of Ryan Haynes, Alex Gilliead and Aaron Amadi-Holloway to the Shrewsbury ranks this summer.
