Thierry Henry shortlisted for shock Aston Villa appointment

The Daily Mail claims that the new Aston Villa owners could hire Thierry Henry as their new manager, if they decide to part ways with current boss Steve Bruce. Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens reportedly have a 55% stake in the club, making them the decision makers at Villa Park from now on.

Dr Tony Xia has become the co-chairman of the football and also remains on the board. However, like all new owners, the future of the current manager is placed under threat given how he is ‘not their man’. Bruce of course could still be backed, but plans are in place should they indeed make plans for something different. Henry is one name under consideration.

Henry, who turns 41 next month, has severed ties with Sky Sports as a football pundit in order to fully concentrate on his coaching career. He is on the Belgium coaching staff under Roberto Martinez, and helped guide the Red Devils to their best ever World Cup finish in Russia this summer.

At this stage, the vibes are indeed that Bruce will stay in a job. Of course, a poor start to the season would place significant pressure on him.

The Arsenal legend is yet to manage any club at senior level so far, but he is committed to finding his first challenge in that sphere. He has certainly developed a taste for management during his time with Belgium, with whom he currently remains under contract with. This is a role he has held since August 2016, but he is clearly starting to develop an interest in managing a club in his own right. Aston Villa might be that club, but it looks unlikely at this very moment in time.
