Middlesbrough to make double swoop for Aston Villa midfield duo

According to Football Ghana, Middlesbrough are set for a double swoop for Aston Villa midfielders Birkir Bjarnason and Albert Adomah.

Middlesbrough had reportedly enquired about the availability of Iceland international Birkir Bjarnason and former-Boro player Albert Adomah in recent weeks, but it seems Boro are ready to step up their interest and table bids for the Villa duo.

Adomah was a fan favourite at Middlesbrough, and helped them achieve promotion in 2016 under Aitor Karanka. But on-going contract disputes led to the Teessiders selling the Ghanaian to Steve Bruce’s side.

Many Boro fans have been calling out for a wide midfielder since the departure of Adomah, and a return to the club would be welcomed with open arms.

Adomah netted 15 times and provided seven assists in all competitions last season for the Villains, and it could be difficult to pry him away from Villa Park. However, after a successful spell in Teesside in the past, a possible move back to The Riverside could turn the winger’s head.

Bjarnason is a new name on the Middlesbrough shortlist, and could be available for cheap given Villa’s current financial issues. The midfielder is versatile and can play in a number of positions, and would be a vital squad member given his experience in Serie A, in the Champions League with Basel and in the Championship.

Aston Villa defeated Middlesbrough in the Play Off semi-finals over two legs last season, but were beaten by Fulham in the Final at Wembley. Both Middlesbrough and Villa will be hoping to go one better and achieve promotion in the upcoming campaign.
