25-year-old Brentford man chooses Sheffield United over Leeds in £4million deal

West London Sport reports that Brentford defender John Egan is closing in on a £4million switch to Sky Bet Championship rivals Sheffield United. The Sheffield Star also states the Blades are ‘confident’ of securing the signing of the 25-year-old Irishman.

Whilst the Bees saw Andreas Bjelland depart for FC Copenhagen this summer, they are still content to allow another defender to move in. Dean Smith has bolstered his squad with the acquisition of Ezri Konsa from Charlton Athletic, whilst they continue to repel AFC Bournemouth’s hopes of snapping up highly-rated youngster Chris Mepham. Egan was in and out of the team last season.

Since signing on a free transfer after previously being with Gillingham in 2016, Egan has started just under 70 league matches for the club. He has also served as captain within that period too. However, last season he started to find himself on the bench more than he would like, especially after the emergence of now Welsh international Mepham.

Talks have continued overnight to try and get this deal across the line as quickly as possible. Egan is no stranger to Bramall Lane either, after having a loan spell with the club much earlier in his playing career back in 2012. Egan is said to favour a switch to the likely brand of football Chris Wilder intends to implement. Leeds United are also said to have been in the hunt for the player, but Marcelo Bielsa will have to admit defeat in this particular quest.

Jack O’Connell has been linked with a move to Brighton & Hove Albion for £6million too. Perhaps the addition of Egan could open up the door for the centre back to move on.
