Hurst admits key player may leave Ipswich amid Championship interest

Speaking on BBC Radio Suffolk (East Anglian Daily Times article) this morning, Ipswich Town manager Paul Hurst acknowledges that there is ‘firm’ interest in striker Martyn Waghorn, and that he could not guarantee he will still be an Ipswich player after the transfer window closes.

Strikers are thin on the ground in the Ipswich roster, even more so after David McGoldrick departed this summer too. New signing Jordan Roberts, who is a midfielder, recently started up front in a recent pre-season friendly game. Waghorn was Ipswich’s top scorer last season with 16 goals.

Sky Bet Championship trio Derby County, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest have all been mentioned as interested parties for the player. However, in the last few hours, it is understood that Sheffield United have produced an offer of £5million, according to the Daily Star.

Hurst confirmed that clubs want to sign the player but is still hopeful he’ll be at Portman Road for the upcoming campaign,

“I’m not here to try and fool anyone, I never do, because there is interest there – firm interest.

“I’ve said to Martyn I would like him to stay at the football club and we’ll see how that unfolds.

“I’d love to be able to say to you and the listeners 100% that Martyn Waghorn will be in the team against Blackburn but I can’t honestly say that.

“But at the minute I don’t think we are close to meeting the valuation for the player and, really, I’d like him here.”

Hurst also has Joe Garner and Freddie Sears as forward options. Younger players like Aaron Drinan, Ben Folami, Ben Morris and Shane McLoughlin are also on the books, too.
