Sunderland step up pace in £600,000 74-goal striker hunt

According to the Chronicle Live, Sunderland are stepping up the pace in their attempts to sign Bradford City striker Charlie Wyke.

Chronicle Live report that Sunderland’s head of recruitment in West Yorkshire Tony Coton was at Valley Parade to see Wyke in action against Championship side Sheffield United.

However, football-wise it proved to be something of a damp squib of a journey for Coton with Wyke going off injured after just eight minutes. That injury withdrawal was something that caused a mini Twitter spat with Wyke vehemently defending himself against accusations of faking an injury with transfer interest known.

Sunderland are thought to have increased their bid for Wyke from League One rivals Bradford City to £600,000 – a figure quoted by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie (below):

Across his football career, the powerfully built Wyke has hit 74 goals since starting out at Middlesbrough. His initial time in football was through a series of loan deals from Boro to the likes of Kettering Town and Hartlepool United.

However it was at Carlisle where he made a name for himself, Wyke featuring in 89 games and netting 38 goals. This proficiency saw Bradford City take the plunge and bring the big man from Cumbria to West Yorkshire where the goal vein has continued.

In 62 games for the Bantams Wyke has scored 23 goals as well as providing 13 assists. It is this level of performance that will have alerted recently relegated Sunderland who are looking increasingly towards getting their man.
