Leeds target set to snub Whites for Sheffield United move

Leeds United target John Egan is set to depart Brentford for Sheffield United rather than the Whites, according to respected journalist Alan Nixon.

The Republic of Ireland defender began his career on Wearside playing for Sunderland. However, with first-team chances limited, the defender was often sent out on-loan, featuring for the likes of Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Bradford City.

In 2014 though, the talented player made his first permanent move away from the Stadium of Light as he signed for Sky Bet League One side Gillingham.

It was at the Priestfield Stadium that Egan started to show his full potential. Making 92 appearances in a two-season spell with the Gills, Egan scored an impressive eleven goals as a central defender. This successful spell in Kent earned the defender a move into the Sky Bet Championship, where he has continued to prosper as a talented central defender in Brentford’s defensive department.

Egan currently has two years left on his contract at Griffin Park but, having continued to impress during his 71 appearances for the bees, the central defender has cemented himself into the spotlight in recent weeks.

Midway through June it was reported that Leeds were beginning to signal interest in their defender, but it appears that the 25-year-old will head to the Whites’ Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United rather than Elland Road.

The Whites have been suffering defensively over the past twelve months. Last season saw the Yorkshire side concede 64 goals from 46 Sky Bet Championship fixtures – the worst record in the top fifteen sides in the League – and their leaky defence has played a large factor in stopping them from maintaining a push for promotion.
