Middlesbrough and Leeds left to battle it out for in-demand Championship defender

According to The Bristol Post, Premier League interest surrounding Bristol City left-back Joe Bryan has faded, leaving Middlesbrough and Leeds United in pole position to sign the defender.

The Bristol City man has been valued at £10 million by the Robins, and it is believed many Premier League clubs are set to not match their valuation.

The likes of Fulham, Burnley and Bournemouth had reported an interest in Bryan, but have since turned their attentions elsewhere. Fulham have recently signed Nice left-back Maxime Le Marchand, whereas Bournemouth have made an enquiry into the availability of Celtic’s Kieran Tierney and Uruguayan Diego Laxalt of Genoa.

Leeds and Middlesbrough will now battle it out to secure the signature of Bryan, who only has a year left on his contract at Ashton Gate. The left-back has turned down a new contract in recent months, and City now risk losing the player for free next summer if they don’t sell.

The Whites have set their sites on other targets so far this summer, and are looking for a new striker. Derby County’s Matej Vydra is still on their shortlist, and could be a priority over Joe Bryan, which could see them miss out on a target yet again to a rival club if Middlesbrough pursue their interest.

Middlesbrough left-back Fabio left the club this morning to join French Ligue 1 side Nantes on a three-year deal. Boro’s only recognised left-back is now George Friend, and they will be actively looking to replace Fabio in this window. Tony Pulis will seemingly prioritise this position, with Bryan a prime target for the Teessiders.
