Cardiff end West Brom forward interest because of £15million valuation

Speaking to Wales Online, Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has confirmed that the club will not be signing Matt Phillips from West Bromwich Albion. After making an initial phone call to discuss the possibility six weeks ago, Warnock said they were not prepared to pay the asking price for the Scotland international.

Whilst it is only in the last week or so that this interest has come to light in the media, Warnock said it was actually several weeks ago when they made contact with West Brom over a potential deal. Nevertheless, the result of that call means Phillips will not be a Cardiff City player next season.

Speaking following their 6-0 pre-season friendly over AFC Tavistock last night, where Warnock fielded a strong side, he revealed that they have ended their chase for the 27-year-old,

“I made one phone call to West Brom six weeks ago and they told me £15million so I’ve never spoke about him since.”

The search for Cardiff therefore moves elsewhere, with Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic remains on the agenda. He ended last season on loan at the Cardiff City Stadium, helping them win promotion.

Phillips however is likely to start the new campaign at the Hawthorns, especially if the asking price is set as it is. This is likely to put several potential suitors off, such as Cardiff. He has spent the last two seasons with the club following a £5.5million switch from Queens Park Rangers back in 2016. He has also played for Wycombe Wanderers, Blackpool and had a loan stint at Sheffield United.
