Nottingham Forest handed boost in pursuit of former Leeds United star

Nottingham Forest have been handed a boost to their hopes of landing West Ham United full-back Sam Byram, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

A tweet from Nixon earlier on Saturday confirmed that several West Ham players should be on their way out of the exit door, including the likes of Michael Antonio, Pedro Obiang and long-term Nottingham Forest target Sam Byram.

The full-back has been frozen out at West Ham by boss Manuel Pellegrini and was reported by Talksport back in June to be on the verge of a move to Nottingham Forest, albeit on a season-long loan deal.

With Fulham right-back Ryan Fredericks arriving a couple of weeks back, the warning flags have been there for Byram, who faces a season as a squad player with the Hammers or a move elsewhere.

The 24-year-old right-back made a name for himself at boyhood club Leeds United, making 143 appearances for the Whites in all competitions over a four-year period and establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the Championship.

However, while a move to West Ham in 2015 promised to take Byram’s career to the next level, the Thurrock-born defender found first-team chances hard to come by, making just four appearances for the Hammers in his debut season at Premier League level.

22 appearances in 2016/17 indicated a step in the right direction, but another season with little first-team action last year means Byram is running out of patience in South London and could well now be on the move back to the Championship with Forest.
