Liverpool set to give up in pursuit of Stoke City star

Champions League finalists Liverpool are set to give up in their bid to sign Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland, after Jurgen Klopp said that the club are no longer in the market for a new shot stopper.

Reports over the past few months had suggested that the Reds were looking to sign a first choice keeper following Lorius Karius’ poor performance in the Champions League final, but it appears that Klopp is keeping faith with the keepers he currently has at Anfield.

This is according to a report by the Mirror, who state that Klopp is set to give Danny Ward a chance to stake his claim for a first team spot.

Liverpool had been the favourites to sign Jack Butland ever since Stoke City’s 10 year stay in the Premier League was ended in the 2017/18 campaign.

The England goalkeeper is currently in Russia with the England squad as they prepare for the third-place Play-Off in the FIFA World Cup, and Butland is expected to be given his chance as Jordan Pickford takes a well earned rest.

His future was expected to be decided when he returned from Russia, but seeing as Liverpool have now dropped out, it remains unclear exactly what his future holds.

He had also been linked with a move to Arsenal, but they have already signed former Bayer Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno, so it is unlikely that they will splash the cash on another shot stopper.

This will give Stoke City hope of keeping hold of Butland ahead of their Sky Bet Championship season.
