Jansson, West Bromwich Albion chasing Leeds United defender

West Bromwich Albion chasing Leeds United defender

West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing star Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson, according to Swedish publication Expressen.

Darren Moore has been tasked with building a squad capable of gaining promotion back to the Premier League and has identified the Leeds defender as one of his main targets.

The 27 year old became a cult hero at Elland Road during his first season in Yorkshire and the Whites made his loan spell permanent last summer.

He has made 76 Championship appearances over his two seasons with Leeds and his performances have attracted the attention of the Baggies.

After the departure of Gareth McAuley and the impending sale of Craig Dawson, Albion are lacking in depth in the defensive department.

The West Midlanders have also been linked with singing Swansea defender Kyle Bartley, who formed a formidable partnership with Jansson during his time at Leeds during the 16-17 season.

The Swedish defender has been away on international duty this summer as he was part of the Sweden team that made the quarter finals of the World Cup.

He played the full 90 minutes in the opening game against South Korea, but played only 5 more minutes in the competition – coming on as a substitute against England.

He made his senior debut for Sweden in 2012 in a friendly match against Bahrain.

It is extremely unlikely that new Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will want to sell his key man, but could be tempted if Albion submit a substantial offer.

Jansson is an experienced international defender and has made over 70 appearances in the second tier. He would be an excellent addition for the Baggies as they aim for instant promotion back to the top flight.
