Paul Scholes says Leeds fans were “psychopaths” as he describes Elland Road atmosphere

Paul Scholes has played in the best grounds around the world, from England and all over Europe there isn’t many more footballers who stay at one club will ever get to see. When picking out which ground was the most hostile, he chose Leeds United, how could he not?

Yes he called the Leeds fans psychopaths but in reality most Leeds fans will take that as a compliment. Elland Road is one of the grounds that many fans don’t like to admit they like coming to but in reality they do. It’s old, still has its old features as well as new and improved ones and can create a mad atmosphere that doesn’t always work out in Leeds’ favour.

As Scholes has pointed out he used to love winning at Elland Road more than other grounds because of the hostile environment, he isn’t the first to say this. A few years back Samir Nasri was asked where his favourite ground to play was, and bearing in mind he arrived to the Premier League post-Leeds United and played there just once in a cup game, he chose Leeds.

Leeds fans will happily admit that Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was a cracking player, but they didn’t like him and when he came to Elland Road, like many of the other Manchester United players he knew it. The frenzy whipped up in the stands spilled onto the pitch and the Roses Derby was, and still is seen as one of the biggest in the country, despite Leeds’ absence for many years.

Leeds will return to the Premier League at some stage and when that does happen, much of the commercialised scene will be taken aback at what they will witness. It’s fair to describe Elland Road as “old school”. Paul Scholes certainly thought so.
