Bolton Wanderers are close to signing Pawel Olikowski on a free transfer according to a report from The Bolton News.
There has been a lot of bad news coming out of the Macron Stadium recently. They were forced to cancel a friendly against Scottish side St Mirren due to a number of their players going on strike due to claims of unpaid wages and bonuses. This recalls the season where their financial problems were weekly headlines and ended in them being relegated to Sky Bet League One.
But Bolton fans may soon get something to cheer as despite those problems, they are close to signing a player. However, it is not a player that many Bolton fans will be familiar with. Olikowski is a 28-year-old defender who has been capped by Poland on 13 occasions though he hasn’t been in the international squad since 2015 and was not part of their 2018 World Cup squad. He was most recently contracted to German side FC Koln but was released this summer after their relegation from the Bundesliga and now could head to England for the first time in his career.
Because of Bolton’s financial situation, no one can expect them to make big money signings which would completely change the shape of their squad. And so this signing may actually be a smart one to do. Olikowski may not have experienced the Championship before but he has been up against some of the best both for Poland and for Koln in the Europa League and the Bundesliga and should be able to tackle any challenge put in front of him.
