Sheffield United in audacious attempt to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker

Sheffield United are interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday’s Sam Winnall according to a report from Sheffield Star journalist James Shield.

Winnall has been out of the first team picture at Wednesday almost as soon as he signed. His signing was overshadowed a week later by the move to bring Jordan Rhodes in and he has struggled to get into the first team since. Last season he spent the season on loan at Derby County and was doing well with the Rams until suffering a season-ending injury. He was hoping to return to the East Midlands but Gary Rowett’s departure as head coach stopped that.

Even though Winnall has now returned to Wednesday and has stated that he is looking to do all he can to get back into the first team, there are still some thoughts that he is going to leave. Even with Jordan Rhodes nearing the exit door with a loan spell at Norwich City on the cards, there are still many top quality strikers including Gary Hooper, Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao who are in between him and a starting spot. And with Wednesday looking to sell players to make room in the budget, Winnall looks like the ideal man to sell.

But while many might expect Winnall to leave, they probably would expect him to go a bit further than their Steel City rivals. Sheffield United are interested in signing him with their head coach Chris Wilder holding that interest since the January transfer window. Not many have played for both clubs and very few have either directly moved from one club to the other but if a deal is there to be done, it might happen this summer.
