Middlesbrough enquire about Southampton full-back – Possibility of a swap deal?

According to The Hartlepool Mail, Middlesbrough are interested in signing Southampton full-back Sam McQueen on a permanent deal.

Middlesbrough have enquired about Saints youngster Sam McQueen, as Tony Pulis looks to bolster his squad for the upcoming Championship campaign.

Tony Pulis is said to be a big fan of the full-back and would like him at the club to provide competition for George Friend and Fabio da Silva at left-back. His versatility means he can also play as a left-midfielder, and would undoubtedly be a welcome addition on Teesside.

McQueen was given his Premier League debut in 2016 for Southampton under Claude Puel. The defender was given the opportunity after impressing out on loan at Southend United, where he scored twice in 16 games.

But the 23-year olds playing time was reduced significantly last season with new managers Mauricio Pellegrino and Mark Hughes coming to the club. McQueen only managed seven appearances in all competitions; compare this to 20 the season prior, it may be time to move on for the Saints academy product.

There are also reports that McQueen could be part of a swap deal involving Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson. It is expected that the offer will be a ‘player + cash’ deal for Gibson, with the centre-back valued at around the £20 million mark.

However, conflicting reports suggest that Southampton have turned their attention to Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Jannik Vestergaard, who is set for a medical at the club. This resulted in Southampton cooling their interest in Gibson.

But if they could get Gibson for a cut price and show a want-away player the exit door, it could be beneficial for all parties involved.
