Former Barcelona youngster hits first of season for Leeds United U-23

In fairness, it is not often that you get to use the words ‘Barcelona’ and ‘Leeds United’ in the same sentence, but it is justified these days – at times, anyway.

The reason for being able to justifiably do so is due to last season, Leeds United bringing in talented youngster Kun Temenuzhkov from Barcelona during last summer’s transfer window. It was at a time the Whites were revamping their youth set-up – a part of the club left to go fallow under former owner Massimo Cellino.

The young Bulgarian striker arrived at Barcelona after spells at junior clubs Fraga, Lleida and UE Bordeta, originally being brought into the Barcelona Youth set-up at La Masia in 2014. He graduated into the Barcelona Juvenil B squad, the age-group side we’d recognise as Under-17, at the end of July 2016.

The following season, for Barcelona’s Cadete A side, youngster Temenuzhkov netted 31 goals in just 29 games.

The Bulgarian youngster also really kicked on at Leeds United for the Under-23s and Under-18s, showing his La Masia potential despite being just 17 years of age.

He’s still kicking on this season.

Above is the skillful Bulgarian youngster scoring in Leeds United’s Under-23 first game of the pre-season against their counterparts from Wigan. A lofted ball is played from inside Leeds United’s and Temenuzhkov takes the ball brilliantly in his stride. A deft touch brings it under control, and he rounds the flailing keeper before slotting it in to an empty net.

There is no doubting that there is something special in Kun Temenuzhkov, you don’t get to hit 31 goals for a Barcelona youth side without having more than a little something about you.

The question is, what to do if he continues to bang them in for the Under-23s like he was doing for the Under-18s last season? Common sense will tell you that he’s not quite ready to hit the straps for the first team at Leeds – that really would be too drastic a step up in class.

However, should he have a storming first four months to his Under-23 campaign then the powers that be at Leeds United might just want to look at seeing if they can get him experience with either a League One or League Two side.
