Leeds United to battle QPR for forgotten near £10m Premier League striker

Leeds United and QPR were sides with similar fortunes at the end of last season’s Sky Bet Championship campaign. Both were scrapping for mid-table mediocrity and actually faced of on the last day of the sorry season at Elland Road.

On that day it was home side Leeds United who took the spoils in what turned out to be then-manager Paul Heckingbottom’s last game as boss – the Whites running out easy 2-0 winners.

Now, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, the two sides could be gearing up again for another tussle, this time off the field and over a potential target. As was written about on The72 earlier Leeds United were interested in West Ham’s Jordan Hugill, but now they face competition from London side QPR.

Hugill has turned into something of a forgotten man since a £9.2 million to the capital with West Ham at the end of January this year. Hugill didn’t have the best of début campaigns for West Ham in last season’s Premier League, featuring just three times for the Hammers against Brighton, Watford and Southampton.

That three-game run for The Hammers came after 27 appearances in the Championship for Preston, 27 appearances that returned eight goals and two assists. Across his time at Preston, Hugill has featured 114 times, scoring 30 goals and providing six assists for the Lancastrians.

Nixon says that newly installed Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa “is eyeing a loan swoop” for the former Preston man but warns that the West Yorkshire side will not have it all their own way. Nixon says that “they [Leeds] face a battle for the hitman” with their “Championship rivals” QPR.

Leeds have been linked to the likes of Abel Hernandez and Matej Vydra but, with those deals seemingly dragging their heels, maybe a loan move for the forgotten Hugill will be a good piece of business for the Whites.
