Leeds United loan striker Grot bags first goals

Jay-Roy Grot cuts an imposing figure on the pitch, he has the appearance of a roughly-hewn brute. Despite that, his first season in English football didn’t pan out that well.

He was given the customary days of grace by Leeds United fans to settle in to a new country, a new club and a new way of football. However, it soon became abundantly clear that patience would only stretch so far.

The powerfully-built Holland Under-20 international signed for the Whites for a fee of around £1.5 million last summer, but struggled to make his mark stepping across from NEC Nijmegen and the Eredivisie to Leeds United and the Sky Bet Championship.

Grot has potential, likely bags of it, but Leeds United fans didn’t get to see that during his 19 Championship appearances (295 minutes) in the famous white shirt.

He was utilised mainly as a substitute by Thomas Christiansen and, after Christiansen was sacked, by Paul Heckingbottom. Indeed, Grot only started one game, against Preston North End, and his sum contribution across the season was one goal and one assist.

Therefore, a loan out the Dutch Eredivisie side VVV Venlo is likely the best move for both parties. For Grot it will give him a decent amount of game time to recapture that promise, for Leeds United it will mean that he’ll hopefully return after this season in better form.

He’s already started at something of a gallop for Venlo, netting a brace in his first game for them. Fair enough it might have been a bit of a mismatch, Venlo putting 7 past minnows Veritas – running out comfortable 7-1 winners.

Grot who played a 60-minute game before being part of wholesale changes, scored in the 14th and 30th minutes of today’s game. Yes, you can criticise and knock the quality and level of the opposition and the competition they provide. What you can’t knock are the goals – and Grot bagged two of them today.
