Stoke City dealt a blow in pursuit of Premier League winger

Stoke City have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Newcastle United and Scotland winger Matt Ritchie.

The Potters are preparing for life back in the Sky Bet Championship after their ten year stay in the Premier League was ended last season, and they had targeted Ritchie as a player that could help them bounce back at the first time of asking.

The Newcastle man has been cited as the perfect replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri, who is expected to leave the club this summer.

The Swiss international is a target for a number of Premier League clubs, including North West giants Liverpool and Manchester United.

However, Stoke have suffered a blow in their bid to sign Matt Ritchie, after a reliable journalist confirmed they face a big hurdle in their pursuit of him.

Alan Nixon of the Sun has confirmed that Newcastle United are looking increasingly unlikely to re-sign Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.

The former England man would be used as a replacement for Ritchie at St James’ Park, and the news that Crystal Palace are unwilling to sell Townsend could spell trouble for Stoke.

Matt Ritchie is an extremely experienced footballer, who knows exactly what it takes to make it out of the Sky Bet Championship.

He has earned promotion from the second tier on two separate occasions, helping both AFC Bournemouth and current club Newcastle United to reach the Premier League.

Earlier today, Newcastle United rejected a bid in the region of £15 million for Matt Ritchie from Stoke City.
