Leeds United to make move for 68 cap international striker as Hernandez edges closer to Russia

Leeds United have been interested in signing former Hull City striker Abel Hernandez for a number of weeks now, but it seems that they may have finally given up in their pursuit of the Uruguayan.

Hernandez is edging ever closer to agreeing a deal with Russian giants CSKA Moscow, and Leeds have already set their eyes on an alternative front man.

Earlier this week, the72 reported that Leeds were interested in signing Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo, in what would certainly be one of the most surprising deals to be completed thus far in the transfer window.

This rumour has since developed, with Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport today confirming that there is significant interest from Leeds United, and that Lazio are more than willing to sell the former Ecuador international.

Reports coming from Spain, where Caicedo spent a lot of his career, have also suggested that he is desperate to move back to England after a three year spell at Manchester City between the years 2008-11.

Despite making 33 appearances for Lazio last season, Caicedo is considered surplus to requirements at the Italian giants, and the majority of these appearances actually came as a substitute.

The Ecuadorian only joined Lazio last summer, completing a move from Spanish side Espanyol for a fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £2.5 million.

He boasts a wealth of experience at club level, but it is his international record that is perhaps most impressive.

Caicedo has appeared 68 times for his native Ecuador, scoring 22 goals in the process.
