Sky Bet League One playmaker’s release clause activated – Leeds and Nottingham Forest fans on alert

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed that an unnamed Sky Bet Championship club have activated the release fee in the contract of star man Marcus Maddison.

The former Gateshead playmaker is highly sought after following an excellent couple of seasons in the third tier of English football, and he is expected to leave the Posh this summer.

Maddison only signed a new deal last year, but it has since been revealed that an agreement was struck between the player and Peterborough’s chairman that would allow the 24-year-old to leave the club if they failed to achieve promotion.

Posh did indeed fail to achieve promotion, and consequently Marcus Maddison was placed on the transfer list at the ABAX Stadium.

Leeds United and Nottingham Forest are among the front runners to sign the talented attacking midfielder. Leeds have had bids rejected for him in the past, whilst Nottingham Forest are looking to bring in both him and Peterborough striker Jack Marriott after the pair excelled in Sky Bet League One last season.

Marcus Maddison’s future looks close to being decided, after Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony tweeted in response to a fan saying that his release fee had been activated.

Despite the fact that it has been activated, the Cambridgeshire club are still not happy with the way the payment will be made, which means there is still some work to do for whichever club it is that have had their bid accepted.

Maddison is known as the assist king, and he has created more goals over the last three seasons than any other player in the Football League.
